3 speaking traps that can hinder your public speaking performance as a leader or executive and how to overcome them

💡 1) The criticism trap: When you are hard on yourself for making a mistake.

💡 2) The comparison trap: When you compare your performance with others or expectations of yourself.

💡 3) The conclusion trap: When you speak quickly to finish your point because you feel nervous or naturally speak fast.

Like a performance sport, public speaking requires having the right mindset to prepare and deliver a clear, concise, and compelling presentation. However, these 3 speaking traps can affect your credibility, performance, and impact as a presenter, even as a leader, executive, or expert in your field.

Tips: You can overcome these traps with these 3 mindsets that have helped me deliver high-impact talks and 10x my public speaking impact:

💡 1) Small is big: Celebrate your strengths and small wins to improve your performance. After every presentation or talk, do you find yourself noticing what's wrong or what's strong?

💡 2) Less is more: Focus on one key area at a time for enhancement. You could set a goal this month to make your point clear or enhance your delivery when you speak on the spot.

💡 3) Slow is fast: Speak slowly for maximum impact, allowing your audience to reflect and understand your message better.

Here's a Pro tip:

PRO TIP

“The power of your communication as a leader lies in your ability to understand and be understood. Let your message land.”

- Precious Ile

I used to speak very quickly until I realized that I had spoken, but I hadn't communicated with my audience. Let your message land. Make every word count by pacing yourself.

Whether you're leading a team, board, or stakeholder meeting, speaking slowly conveys gravitas, credibility, and composure. Your audience will buy into your vision or arrive at the conclusion by persuading themselves with their reflections - when you allow your message to hit home.
