5 Leadership Tips to Communicate With Purpose, Empathy, And Love, Even In Challenging Situations

As the holiday season ramps up, it's easy to get caught up in the end-of-year frenzy. As a leader or executive, you may be concerned or under pressure about team goals that aren't getting accomplished, personal leadership goals that appear to have stalled, or next quarter's quota. One's highest best self might take a snooze when faced with communicating under stress or pressure. This might negatively impact your team's performance or success.
My colleague and fellow Leadership Communication Coach, Adeseye Omole gifted me the book, Love as a Business Strategy. Reading the book got me thinking about how a culture of love could be applied to transform how we communicate, especially in challenging times.
In my experience as a leader and coach, it begins with self-awareness or leading one's self first.
Here are 5 tips that ground me when communicating in challenging or high-pressure situations:
💡1) Remember, I am human.
💡2) Pause and embrace silence.
💡3) Don't react. Respond.
💡4) Leverage the power of hindsight. Reflect on what my highest best self would rather say or stay silent.
💡5) Apply the insight to how I speak or communicate.

Love is anything, but soft. It's a hard skill that could strengthen how we communicate if we dare to lead and speak from a place of curiosity, empathy, and purpose.
